A simple system helps travellers with vision loss

Apr 4, 2012News

A smart suggestion from a local bus user in the ACT has resulted in a three-month trial of a system that helps travellers who have vision loss, difficulty reading and limited English hail a bus.

An example of the Canadian kit

Based on a Canadian model, the bus-hailing kit is a clear plastic pouch with three slots for bus route numbers so the person can signal to the approaching bus driver and other travellers at the stop their desired route.

Braille on the top corner of each cardboard number helps the customer insert the correct bus route numbers in to the pouch and reflective strips at the top indicate whether any additional help is needed, such as a ramp or to lower the bus.
